The Jackson County GIS department has created several new online maps and applications available to the general public.
These maps and applications will give citizens basically the same data that county staff has available to view at their fingertips 24 hours a day, seven days a week, notes Joel Logan, GIS coordinator.
Access the maps at http://gis.jacksoncountygov.com.
Among the items offered online are the following:
•Jackson County Flood Plain Explorer: This application helps property owners figure out what portion (if any) is within a 100-year flood plain.
•Jackson County Fire Insurance Explorer: This application helps property owners figure out what fire district they live in and they can also measure the distance of their home/property to the closest fire hydrant.
•Zoning information: Using the advanced application, the zoning information for unincorporated areas, Jefferson and Commerce is available. The staff hopes to add zoning data for more cities later this year.
•3-D terrain and elevation: Using the advanced application, citizens can zoom in and view two feet contours and a 3-D terrain model of the bare earth that shows depressions, ditches, creeks and basically any mark of the land.
•Political boundaries: Using the advanced application, citizens can view the school districts, board of commissioner districts, board of education districts, voting precincts, fire districts, Georgia Militia Districts and the county and city boundaries.
The easiest way to find a particular property is to use the “Find Address” button, but users can navigate using directional arrows — identical to getting around on Google Earth — including the ability to zoom in or back out. Starting with a basic map, the user can add — or subtract — various features — such as utilities, two-foot contours, flood plans, transportation, tax parcels, subdivisions, city limits and other boundaries, Comprehensive Plan maps and more.
