STARs, teachers to be honored Monday

Jackson County will recognize its brightest high school students and its best teachers next Monday.

The Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual STAR Student/Teacher Teacher of the Year Reception at 5:30 p.m. at the Commerce campus of Lanier Technical College, South Elm Street.

STAR students are chosen on the basis of their scores on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). They choose as their STAR teacher the teacher they feel has most contributed to their success.

Teachers of the Year are selected for each school by their peers, and each system chooses one of its school teachers of the year as the system teacher of the year.

The reception is open to the public. School board chairmen from each school system will introduce their STARs, and the superintendents will introduce the teachers of the year.
