A man suspected of shoplifting at Fred’s, South Elm Street, wound up with much more serious charges against him after he was found to be in possession of a prescription drug without a prescription, according to the Commerce Police Department.
An officer was summoned to the store because of a shoplifting call. He entered the store, heard yelling and saw a man taking off shoes and yelling, “I was not trying to steal them,” to a nearby clerk.
The officer said he was afraid that Steven Allen Hollis, 27, of 294 Mountain Creek Drive, Maysville, might attack the clerk, so he grabbed Hollis’ arm and urged him to calm down.
According to the officer’s report, Hollis told the officer that he had planned to go get “his income tax money” and return and buy the shoes.
In talking to the suspect, the officer said he noticed that Hollis’ eyes were glassy, he had trouble standing, appeared to be unstable “and acted like he could go off any minute.”
The officer patted the suspect down for weapons and noted a purple bottle in a pocket. Hollis, the report said, claimed the three pills in the bottle were his vitamins, but the officer thought they looked like Xanax, a prescription drug. He was able to confirm that the pills were Xanax.
Hollis admitted that he did not have a prescription, and told the officer that his mother had given them to him.
The officer charged Hollis with violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act and failure to keep medication in its original container. The report did not indicate that the officer charged him with shoplifting.
