The Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce paid tribute to the top students and teachers in the three local school systems Monday afternoon at its annual reception for STAR students and teachers and teachers of the year.
The event paid tribute to the four STAR students representing Commerce High School, East Jackson Comprehensive High School, Jackson County Comprehensive High School and Jefferson High School, along with the teachers each of those students chose for the STAR teacher honor. It also recognized 21 teachers chosen as Teachers of the Year for their individual schools. Three of those were also recognized as system teachers of the year.
Shining STARs
STAR students are chosen on the basis of their scores on the Scholastic Assessment Test. STAR students and teachers are as follows:
Commerce High School: Ethan Thomas, who chose Matthew Dahlke as his STAR teacher
East Jackson Comprehensive High School: Dakota Chandler, who selected as her STAR teacher Katherine Collins
Jackson County Comprehensive High School: Nicholas Scott Buran, who named Heather Harris as his STAR teacher
Jefferson High School: Julia Ouelette, who selected Janet Schwartz as her STAR teacher
Teachers Of The Year
Commerce: Stacey Miller, a first grade teacher at Commerce Primary School; Christy Johnson, media specialist at Commerce Elementary School; Jodi Hutto, fifth grade teacher, Commerce Middle School; and Matthew Dahlke, system teacher of the year, a science teacher at Commerce High School.
Jackson County: Angie Konarski, a fifth grade teacher at Gum Springs Elementary School, who was the system teacher of the year; Marie Grant, an ESOL teacher at Benton Elementary School; Kaycie Rogers, a gifted teacher at East Jackson Elementary School; Cadee Lee, a first grade teacher at Maysville Elementary School; Jennifer Tucker, a third grade teacher at North Jackson Elementary School; Thomas Wilcox, a fifth grade teacher at South Jackson Elementary School; Fran Allen, a gifted teacher at West Jackson Intermediate School; Bette Eluncke, a first grade teacher at West Jackson Primary School; Heather Duren, a seventh grade teacher at East Jackson Middle School; Shannon Day, a special education teacher at Kings Bridge Middle School; Kathy Jones, a vocational teacher at West Jackson Middle School; Jeffrey Rowser, band teacher at East Jackson Comprehensive High School; Steven Bowles, a math teacher at Jackson County Comprehensive High School.
