Madison County eyes purchase of city water line

The city of Commerce expects to sell about a half mile of water line along Blacks Creek Road to the Madison County Industrial and Development Authority this year.

The eight-inch line, including hydrants, is entirely within Madison County and cost the city about $153,000 to install in 2001, according to Bryan Harbin, the city’s director of water and sewer operations.

“That’s our cost minus depreciation,” Harbin said. “It was a contract price and this was their option year.”

The Madison County IDA got a $2 million state grant to install about 60,000 feet of lines and to buy the Blacks Creek Road section of Commerce line from the city. When the line was installed to alleviate issues with dry wells, Harbin said, the intent of both parties was that Madison County would buy it back. Madison County will install a master meter, pay Commerce a wholesale rate for the water, and take on the responsibilities of reading the individual meters and maintaining the line and those meters.

The Madison County IDA recently awarded a $1.5 million water line project to Griffin Brothers, Maysville, for work in the Neese area.

“They are also looking at tying in on Hwy. 98, installing a meter and buying water from us wholesale,” Harbin said. “We’ve been talking to them for several years about doing that.”

Currently, Commerce also sells water wholesale to Maysville, Banks County and Jackson County.
