'Summit' planned to help bring in ag industries

Representatives of five area counties, including Jackson, are planning an “ag summit” next fall to discuss how to better market the area for agriculture-related companies.

The Northeast Georgia Joint Development Authority, which comprises Jackson, Athens-Clarke, Elbert, Madison and Oglethorpe counties, will host the event.


“I think our region is right for this type of business,” said Shane Short, president of the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce at the chamber’s board of directors meeting last Friday. “It’s big business.”

The group has invited Gov. Nathan Deal to the event, and the date has not been set for the summit pending a response from Deal, according to Short. Others invited to speak include secretary of agriculture Gary Black, secretary of state Brian Kemp and insurance commissioner Ralph Hudgens. Representatives of agricultural groups, such as the Poultry Federation, are also expected to attend.

The tentative location for the event is the Classic Center in Athens.
