It took four sessions of the General Assembly, but Gov. Nathan Deal last week signed legislation introduced by Rep. Tommy Benton that is designed to make it harder to poison dogs with antifreeze.
Deal signed House Bill 40 — Chief’s Law – named for a dog owned by Jefferson resident Becky Davis that was poisoned to death with antifreeze-tainted meat.
The bill, which becomes law July 1, 2012, requires manufacturers of antifreeze sold in Georgia to add denatonium benzoate, which Benton says is “the most bitter substance known,” to keep animals and people from drinking antifreeze.
Governor Nathan Deal signed "Chief's Law" in a ceremony last week.
