A group that usually works to bring industry into Jackson County turned its attention to retail last week — and didn’t like what it saw.
The end result was a consensus to begin exploration of ways the county can entice high-traffic retail stores.
John Buchanan, who develops property for retail clients, brought the matter up Friday morning at the Jackson County Industrial Development Authority’s meeting.
Jackson County reaps a lot of sales taxes from the Tanger Outlets, but it lacks major retail stores such as Walmart, Home Depot or Lowe's, a situation the Industrial Development Authority would like to see rectified.

"Buchanan floated the idea that it makes sense for Jackson County to donate land to entice a Walmart". What an idiot. Walmart has more money than God and this moron wants to donate land to them so they can put out of business what few locally owned businesses that are left in Jackson County.

Well Coming from someone who once lived in Jackson County.... Why would anyone want to support the "few locally owned businesses"? They all seem to have horrible customer service and higher than average prices. If you can't compete with the big dogs then close your doors. Sounds like a smart idea to me. I personally like Buchanan's idea. Jackson County is behind the times, once a prospering county now a dead end.
