BOE prepares for SACS visit

Commerce City Schools are getting an early start on preparing for a visit from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

SACS is a program of accreditation to assure that school systems meet educational standards set up by SACS.

To be SACS accredited, Commerce City Schools are required to meet SACS standards, conduct an internal review annually and conduct an external review every five years.

The city system was last reviewed externally in October 2006, and will be reviewed again this October.

Assistant superintendent Joy Tolbert, was at the board of education’s work session last Thursday to help prepare the board for the visit.

Tolbert compiled a notebook for each board member with SACS’s seven standards along with a list of talking points for board members to familiarize themselves with.

The seven standards are vision and purpose, governance and leadership, teaching and learning, documenting and using results, resources and support systems, stakeholder communications and relationships, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Board members are all interviewed during the SACS review, and the notebook is to be used as a preparation tool.
