Another slow week for police department

The officer who arrived first talked to a 21-year-old white male who told him that a neighbor pulled the knife, so the officer went to speak to the neighbor — Allen.

According to the incident report, Allen denied pulling a knife. He also told police that the people next door brought a baseball bat over and struck him in the back. The officer noted bruises consistent with that claim — and noted an odor of alcohol about Allen.

The officer went back to the first house, where the witness said Gillam and Allen got into an argument and Allen knocked Gillam down, stood up and pulled what appeared to be a knife. The witness said he grabbed a bat and hit Allen.

Gillam, according to the report, gave a similar statement.

According to the report, the officer did an blood alcohol test on both subjects, finding Allen at .281 and Gillam at .292, after which he charged them both with disorderly conduct.

The report noted that the Jackson County Jail would not take either man until both were “medically cleared,” so rather than take them to jail, the officer just issued citations.

In the only other arrest, an officer charged Jose G. Lopez, 19, 4250 Mt. Olive Road, Commerce, with driving without a license.

According to the incident report, the officer saw Lopez driving a Ford pickup truck, knew from a past encounter that Lopez had no driver’s license and pulled him over.

The report indicated that the officer had previously warned Lopez not to drive, and that the officer in this incident reminded Lopez, who said he knew, but he had to take a child to a doctor.

The owner of the pickup arrived and asked if he could drive it from the scene, but the officer refused, ordered the vehicle towed and cited the owner of the vehicle for letting an unlicensed person drive the vehicle.

Arrest Not Reported

There was one more arrest, according to the Jackson County Jail Log.

Douglas Lee Oliver Jr., 27, 137 Citation Court, Athens, was charged with violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act. There was no indication of the circumstances for that arrest, which did not appear among the Commerce Police Department arrest reports.
