A man in possession of 30 grams of methamphetamine picked the wrong person to ride with, according to the Commerce Police Department.
Police charged Jeremy Kent Adams, 38, of 313 New Bethel Road, Commerce, with possession of methamphetamine and trafficking methamphetamine after an officer pulled over the vehicle in which Adams was riding for a brake light violation.
The officer was working Interstate 85 when he saw a vehicle with two males slow down and noted that a brake light was out. The first thing he noticed upon approaching the vehicle, the officer reported, was that Adams seemed overly nervous.
There were other issues as well. While the men both said they were returning from Bass Pro Shop, the report said that Adams claimed the two were related, while the driver, Darrell Frank Smith, 37, 1790 Burnett Road, Toccoa, said they were not.
The officer asked whether the two had weapons and got permission to search the vehicle, but he noticed again that Adams appeared to be breathing heavily, had shaky hands, his carotid artery was pulsating and he refused to look at the officer, the officer wrote.
The officer asked Adams if anything was wrong.
“You already know what’s going on,” he said Adams replied.
The officer asked if Adams possessed any drugs. Adams answered affirmatively. He told the officer he had methamphetamine, and at the officer’s request took a container out of his left sock and gave it to the officer.
He also said that Smith was not involved — just someone who gave him a ride.
However, during a search of the vehicle, officers found a small amount of marijuana in a compartment near the steering wheel and a “roach clip” in the center consol. Smith admitted that the marijuana was his and was arrested on a misdemeanor charge.
