The Commerce Board of Education officially set its 2011 property tax rate at 17.75 mills in a brief called meeting Monday night.
That’s the same rate the board levied the past six years, noted Mac McCoy, superintendent.
That rate is expected to bring in about $3.1 million in taxes, although the board can’t put an exact dollar amount on the levy.
“We still haven’t gotten a final tax digest from Don Elrod (Jackson County tax commissioner),” McCoy told the board. “He says there’s still over 2,000 (re-evaluations) to do.”
As it stands now, the 2011 tax digest is lower than last year, but by less than two percent.
“We’re not in as bad shape as some of the others (tax digests) because of the industrials we got,” said McCoy.
The Commerce digest was saved from a larger devaluation because Northridge Medical Center came on the books. It should get a similar boost in 2012 when a 962,000-square-foot building in the Commerce 85 Industrial Park comes on the digest.
No one attended the Monday night board meeting to comment on the tax levy.
“We’ve had several people thank us for not going up,” McCoy said.
After the superintendent read the tax levy resolution, the board approved it unanimously on a motion by Bill Davis, seconded by Rodney Gary. There was no discussion.
