Commerce police officers made six cases while patrolling Interstate 85 this past week. Among them were three charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, all made by the same officer.
Those charged include:
•Larry Dale Turner Jr., 32, 113 Dusty Road, Greenwood, SC, who was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over for tailgating on I-85. According to the police report, when the driver followed the officer’s instruction and got out of the vehicle, the officer noticed bits of marijuana on the front of Turner’s shirt. The report said Turner admitted to smoking the weed just before the traffic stop and told the officer where to find a bag of marijuana in the vehicle. Turner also claimed full responsibility for the illegal substance. The driver, meanwhile, said he was too close to the truck in front of him because the truck had cut in on him, leaving little space between the vehicles at the time the officer spotted him.

Ok, help me out on this one as well. Why is an officer patting down a driver for a traffic offense? I have a loaded S&W Sigma 9mm sitting between my seats and have never been patted down during a traffic stop. If the officer makes the individual stay in the vehicle why is there a need for a pat down. Sounds to me as if the officer was hunting for more and used a SUBJECTIVE term of following to closely to interogate drivers further. Hopefully the city of Commerce will send him back for remedial traing before he exposes how big of a liability he can be for such a small department.

Who cares who the Commerce Police Department arrests, how about we find something else to fill that section of newspaper with something a little more interesting than who got arrested. Coming from a large city I think that it is sad that is what has to be reported to fill up space in the newspaper

"She was traveling south on I-85 when an officer pulled her over for driving 49 miles per hour." - Um, I just reviewed the Drivers Manaual for the State of Georgia, no mention of a numerical minimum speed. I don't recall any posted minimum speeds on I-85 within Commerce city limit but, the minimum speed on an interstate was at one time 40 mph across Georgia. Note to Commerce Police and citizens, you've already gotten into trouble with your radar usage, do you really want to spend millions on a harrassment case? This police force needs to be put on a leash.

Good point Dave; hopefully she will contest this citation in a court of law and it will be thrown out for lack of merit. I wish someone in an official capacity for the Commerce police department would explain their justification for stopping a person who is above the minimum and below the maximum speed on I-85.
