Three young motorists from Mississippi will have less than fond memories of Georgia after Commerce police charged them with marijuana possession and other offenses last week. But maybe they’ll learn to drive more carefully when they’re using marijuana.
An officer patrolling Interstate 85 pulled over a vehicle for following too closely. When the officer approached the vehicle he noticed seeds in the lap of the front-seat passenger, according to the incident report.
All three of the occupants denied that there were any illegal substances in the vehicle, the report indicated, but all three also admitted to having smoked marijuana just prior to the traffic stop.
After the officer gained permission to search the vehicle, the owner told him he’d find a “blunt” in the ashtray. The officer also said he found “a large amount of marijuana” throughout the vehicle.
The officer charged the driver, James Matthew Green, 21, 1415 Mt. Zion Road, Magee, MS, with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, driving without a license, driving without insurance and following too closely. He charged the owner of the vehicle, Alonda Jo Johnson, 24, 2212 SCR 93, Raleigh, MS, with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, allowing an unlicensed person to drive and violation of the open container law. The third occupant, Justin Kendall Jones, 20, 5514 Hwy. 37, Taylorsville, MS, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
The report also indicated that when Johnson was booked at the Jackson County Jail she informed personnel that she had a baggy of marijuana in her bra, which she retrieved and handed over to police.
Other Charges
Commerce police also charged or cited the following people during the past week:
•Amando Miranda-Ayala, 23, 112 Baxter Road, Commerce, speeding (72/55) and driving without a license. According to the arrest report, the suspect told police that he’d left his driver’s license at home but had his Mexican driver’s license. The officer asked Miranda-Ayala if he had a passport; he did not.
•Jamaica Yalunda Tarpkins, 24, 222 Sweetwater C-2, Mableton, on a probation violation warrant from Athens-Clarke. According to the arrest report, she called police to a Sunny Lane residence and requested transport to Heritage Hills Apartments. The officer got her identification, learned of the warrant and took her to the Jackson County Jail instead.
•Jorge David Zelayla, 21, 130 Piedmont Street, Commerce, driving with a suspended license and failure to wear a seat belt. The officer pulled the vehicle over after observing that the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
•Mark Andrew Bray, 44, 1816 Thyatira-Brockton Road, Jefferson, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, violation of the open container law and a headlight violation. He was pulled over on Starke Street for the headlight offense, whereupon the officer noticed the smell of alcohol. Bray told the officer he’d had “three or four” alcoholic beverages at a wedding reception, the report said.
•Kaheem Lamont Duffy, 30, 5751 Wellborn Oaks Drive, Lithonia, speeding (89/70) and driving with a suspended license (for failure to appear).
•Corderrel R. Carter, 21, 70 Swan Lane, Roberta, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, driving without insurance and driving without a license. The officer saw a vehicle parked in the middle of Nunn Street at 12:34 a.m., the report indicated, with no lights on. He saw Carter leave a Nunn Street house and get in the vehicle, at which time the officer stopped him. The officer said he found a cellophane wrapper containing marijuana in Carter’s pant’s pocket.
•Thomas Calloway Savage, 29, 645 Flat Rock Road, Baldwin, picked up at the Habersham County Jail on an unspecified local warrant.
