Commerce Christmas events taking shape

Scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, the nighttime shopping event will feature horse-drawn carriage rides, caroling and a “passport” system for awarding prizes to people who visit all of the participating merchants.

“The only major change is that to participate in the passport you’ve got to be 18 or older,” McKay said. That move is designed to eliminate a problem encountered last year when several kids went from store to store in an attempt to qualify for the grand prize.

Meanwhile, merchants are organizing a “girls’ night out” on Thursday, Dec. 9. Participating businesses will also have luminaria displays. Likewise, a “couples’ night out” downtown shopping event is on the calendar for Friday, Dec. 16, from 7 p.m. to 9.

Applicants are starting to come in for the Dec. 4 parade, which is set for 3 p.m. in the downtown. The Commerce Kiwanis Club will serve as marshals to keep the parade moving properly, McKay said.
