City electric superintendent injured in accident

Commerce’s electric department superintendent Sammy Ingram was expected to be released from an Athens hospital today after an on-the-job accident Tuesday.

According to city manager Clarence Bryant, Ingram was one of several people holding a rope, attempting to direct the fall of a tree being cut down off Lakeview Drive on city school property.

“It rolled one way, and the rope got slack, then it rolled the other way and it got tight and slapped him in the head, across his left eye,” Bryant said.

The blow from the rope knocked Ingram out, and he fell to the ground, striking the back of his head on the ground.

“He didn’t know where he was when they were putting him on the ambulance,” Bryant said.

Initially, there was some bleeding in the brain, Bryant said, so Ingram spent the night in the intensive care unit under observation. The bleeding apparently stopped.

“He should be coming home this morning,” Bryant said at about 10 a.m. Wednesday.
