Commerce Council to hold planning session

The council will hold its first voting session Monday night at 6:30 in the Commerce Room of the Commerce Civic Center with a light agenda. Among the items on the agenda are:

•appointment of a magistrate judge for a two-year term

•appointment of a city attorney for a one-year term

•two requests for annexation and rezoning, both from Bradberry Court. The Commerce Planning Commission has recommended both for approval.

•approval of an intergovernmental agreement with the Downtown Development Authority related to its note repaying the loan on the Pine Street building

•approval of credit card security policies required by law

•a presentation by a youth softball team

•approval of a resolution naming Hill and Bryant as signatories of Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia documents

•a monthly financial report

At its work session Tuesday night, the council once again broached the subject of the permitting of roofing projects. Mayor pro tem Keith Burchett advocated eliminating the $50 fee and subsequent inspections as an unnecessary burden. Ward 5 councilman Johnny Eubanks argued that the permitting and inspection are necessary to protect Commerce citizens from shoddy work and scam artists. The council reached no consensus.
