Gary elected Commerce BOE chairman

The Commerce Board of Education unanimously voted Rodney Gary to the board’s top post on Monday during its regular January meeting.

Former board chairman, Dr. Paul Sergent, seconded the motion made by Bill Davis, who first asked Sergent if the change suited him.

Sergent agreed. Davis referenced earlier phone calls that Sergent made to each of the board members, during which he apparently indicated his willingness to step aside.

Gary, a four-year member of the board, volunteered for the role, Davis added.

“You’ve done a great job,” Davis told Sergent. “But I think it has been a burden on you and a burden on your medical practice and a hardship. And if it’s alright with you I’d like to put Rodney Gary’s name in there to run for chairman.”

Arthur Lee Pattman, who returned to the board Monday after missing several meetings due to illness, will continue as vice chairman. That vote was also unanimous, with no other nominations presented.
Additionally, the board approved the Gainesville law firm of Harben, Hartley & Hawkins to continue representing the school system. The board appointments are through 2012.
