Toyota to build $350 million Jackson plant

Jackson County just landed its biggest economic development project in county history.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced Tuesday that Toyota Industries Corp. will establish Toyota Industries Compressor Parts America (TICA) in a 600,000-square foot building it will erect on the 152-acre tract in Valentine Farms Industrial Park next to its TD Automotive Compressor Georgia (TACG).

The new plant, which will provide an estimated 320 new manufacturing jobs and represents a $350 million investment, will manufacture parts for the compressors assembled at TACG. TACG currently imports those parts from Japan. Toyota Industries Corp. supplies automotive compressors for Toyota Motor Corporation, as well as Chrysler, Ford, General Motors and others.

The plant is expected to be operational by late 2013, according to Courtney Bernardi, director of economic development for the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Ten years ago almost when we were dealing with Toyota, that’s what they bought the additional acreage for,” explained Scott Martin, chairman of the Jackson County Industrial Authority. “They look far ahead and they were thinking that at some point of time they would be doing another facility. That’s what they’re doing now.”

In November, TACG announced an expansion as well, the value of which Martin estimated at $70 million.

“This (TCIA) is great for us,” Martin said. “It is a testament to the past leadership which put the infrastructure up there and treated them the way they like to be treated.”

The announcement is just the latest in a string of economic success stories for Jackson County. In November, Bed Bath and Beyond announced plans to build a distribution center expected to provide 900 jobs over four years. The same week, TACG announced its expansion, and in early December Kubota revealed plans to build a $73 million plant to manufacture a new line of tractors.
