With a lot on its plate for 2012, the Commerce City Council faces a long agenda for Monday night’s meeting at 6:30 in the Commerce Civic Center.
The council will hire an interim city manager (see separate story), resolve its debate over whether re-roofing a house should require a city permit, consider amending its distilled spirits pouring license to cut the rate by more than half (just in the central business district), make plans to provide for an interpreter and public defender for municipal court, and could approve a final resolution to the greenspace controversy at Oconee Pointe Subdivision.
Busy agenda for city council Monday night

Why doesn't King Chandler worry about Magistrate Court and not The City of Commerce Court. Lord knows if you get a ticket you have to call him between 8 and 5, which is when he's acting as the Magistrate Judge. So he's getting paid to deal with issue for his hometown court while he's drawing his salary as Magistrate Judge. Think it's time for a change folks......

So would you prefer that he not be available by phone at all, like most municipal judges?

He should handle it on his city payroll time not on his time that he's receiving compensation from the citizens of Jackson County for Magistrate duties. The citizen of Jackson County should not have to pay for him dealing with City of Commerce Municipal Court issues. His compesation is around $18,000 a year to handle a part-time court judgeship. Maybe he should take his furlough day and deal with Commerce issues. Just saying, I don't feel it's fair to the taxpayers of Jackson County for him to be handling Commerce issues on county time. Strictly my opinion and we all know what opinion are like..........

The reason this isn't a scandal is that a magistrate judge, like lots of folks who get salaries, sometimes have to work late, on weekends, or in the middle of the night (depending on when a warrant might be needed). If he's taking phone calls for a few minutes here and there that will make city court shorter, it's possible that the county gets that few minutes back from him when law enforcement needs him to take action after hours.

Am I missing something? After a row with my missis on friday I got throwed in the county jail. I had to spend the weekend jail before I could appear before Magistrate Judge Chandler on Monday. Magistrate judges working nights and weekends are like trying to find Stan the man at the sheriff's office.

Exactly Grandpa. That's part of my point. To Double Dipper, if you were making the salary that the Chief Magistrate is making you wouldn't mind coming out on the wwekends or maybe once or twice a night. Of course that only happens when a major issue occurs, like a homicide, where a search waarant is needed. Might I remind you that we have an associate magistrate judge to assist with call and who also goes to the jail on weekends to do first apperance hearings. Stop trying to justify because it all sounds good on your part but believe you me I have first hand knowledge on how much City of Commerce business gets handled on Jackson County Tax payers time.......I'm just hoping that Clark Hill will make some changes around Commerce and bring in a few individuals who are actually in the 21st Century now.
