After driving fast with no headlights on and ramming a vehicle stopped at a stop sign, a 20-year-old Commerce man tried to convince the driver of the other vehicle that someone else was behind the wheel.
It didn’t work.
Police charged Johnny Blake McDaniel, 348 Victoria Street, with driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs, hit and run, following too closely, driving too fast for conditions and failure to use headlights a half hour past sunset.
According to the incident report, 911 dispatched the officer to a traffic accident without injuries at the corner of Shankle Heights and Elizabeth Street. The dispatcher said the drivers were fighting. When he arrived, the officer saw a black male holding a white male down on the ground.
McDaniel was the subject on the ground. The driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old white male, explained that he and Eunice G. Tarpkins, 43, 44 Land Way, were stopped at the stop sign when McDaniel plowed into the back of their vehicle. He told the officer McDaniel was driving fast and without headlights.
The driver said he got out, asked McDaniel how fast McDaniel had been driving, then went back to his vehicle to get a flashlight to inspect for damage. When he got to the back of his car, he said McDaniel was standing on the roadway 10 feet away and claimed that he was a spectator to the crash — that the car was not his and he was not driving. The man also said he saw McDaniel go back to the car, get something out and begin to walk away, at which time he tackled him and asked Tarpkins to hold him down until police arrived.
The officer noted that McDaniel appeared to be under the influence of something and had glassy and droopy eyes.
The report said McDaniel refused to take the state blood test.
The night didn’t turn out so well for Tarpkins either. He was arrested on a Banks County warrant for probation violation.
