Plans are under way to relocate materials from the Commerce Public Library during the construction of a 5,000-square-foot addition.
City manager Clarence Bryant updated the Commerce City Council on the project at the council’s “work session” meeting Monday night.
The project is being bid currently, with bids to be opened March 30, Bryant said. He reminded the council that the first bids, received in 2011, were rejected and the plans were subsequently modified to try to bring the project in under budget.
“Also, we think we’ve found a place to relocate the library to during construction,” Bryant added.
The city is prepared to lease the former Video Warehouse building on North Elm Street in the old Commerce Plaza shopping center. The building has some computer hookups in place, and Bryant said the landlord, Mary Cowart, has agreed to build an additional rest room.
“This will save a lot of time and cost in constructing the library because you don’t have to shift everything around and shift it back again. …We will try to relocate as much of the operation as feasible.”
Mayor pro tem Keith Burchett asked how long the relocation would last.
“I don’t know,” Bryant responded, “but it will cut the construction time down at least three months.”
