The railroad grade crossing on U.S. 441 near Ingles will be replaced starting Monday, weather permitting, creating delays as the work continues, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The work requires lane closures to Highway 334 and U.S. 441/Highway 15 during the day Monday. On Monday night, U.S. 441 will have only one lane open in each direction, and on Tuesday, U.S. 441/Highway 15 (South Elm Street) will be closed from Highway 98 to the railroad crossing while the crossing is paved.
U.S. 441 traffic will be diverted onto the Ila Road.
Norfolk Southern Railroad will remove the old roadbed and replace it for an improved crossing for vehicular traffic, according to the DOT.
“Delays are expected,” the DOT advised in a news release. “Please avoid the area if possible.”
