Rail crossing project delayed

The Georgia Department of Transportation delayed until next week the scheduled repairs to the railroad crossing on the U.S. 441 bypass near Ingles.

The work has been rescheduled to Monday and Tuesday, March 26-27, weather permitting.

The DOT asks motorists to avoid the area during construction if possible. Work will create delays.

The project requires lane closures to Hwy. 334 and to U.S. 441/Hwy. 15 during the day Monday. Monday night, U.S. 441 will have just one lane open in each direction, and on Tuesday, U.S. 441/Hwy. 15 will be completely closed from Hwy 98 to the grade crossing and traffic will be detoured onto Hwy. 98 (Ila Road.)

A scheduling error caused the delay, according to the DOT. The work was supposed to have taken place this last Monday and Tuesday.

Norfolk Southern Railway will remove the damaged roadbed and replace it for a smoother and sturdier crossing for vehicles, the DOT said.
