Library bid comes in at $1.4 million

A workable apparent low bid for the 5,000-square-foot addition to the Commerce Public Library appears to indicate the long awaited project is about to start.

City manager Clarence Bryant informed his city council during Monday night’s work session meeting that Benning Construction Company, Smyrna, submitted the low bid of “$1.4 million and change.”

Bryant said the Piedmont Regional Library may have to alter some plans for the interior of the building to come in under the $2 million budget, but said that “should not be a problem” because a $100,000 contingency is included in that budget.

The price includes the cost of relocating library services to the former Video Warehouse building off Maysville Road. According to Bryant, not all of the library’s inventory will be moved, and the construction crew will work around what is not moved to the temporary location. City staff will move the materials.

He said ground breaking could occur by May 1.

“The only holdup is us getting out,” he advised the council.

Bryant said Benning Construction Company has built two other libraries.

The first bids on the project came in well over budget, so officials made some changes and re-bid the project.
