Eighty-eight high school seniors are scheduled to turn the tassel Friday night signifying their graduation from Commerce High School.
The graduation ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. It will be moved into the CHS gym in the event of bad weather.
Speakers for the event will be valedictorian Brooke Leigh Stanley and honor graduates Tirth Devang Shah, Raj Devang Shah and Halley Myran Smith.
Graduates will march onto the field to “Pomp and Circumstance,” played by the CHS Band (minus its seniors). Chase Klugh will offer the invitation and Elizabeth Whitlock the welcome, after which the top four honor graduates will address their peers under the theme of “We’ll learn to take life as it comes at us …to make each day count,” from the character Jack Dawson in “Titanic.”
Alexander Peek will introduce guests, associate superintendent Joy Tolbert will recognize award winners, principal Donnie Drew will present the class and superintendent James E. McCoy will provide the confirmation of graduation. Rodney Gary, chairman of the Commerce Board of Education, will present the diplomas.
Andrea Mathis will lead the closing prayer, after which the audience will sing the CHS Alma Mater, and then the 88 new high school graduates will march off the field as the band plays “Firework Music” by Handel.
