The Commerce Board of Education accepted superintendent James “Mac” McCoy’s recommendation Monday night to hire Bill Ruma as the new Commerce Middle School principal.
Ruma comes to Commerce from Apalachee High School in Barrow County, where he has served as the assistant principal since 2003.
Ruma has been in education since 1997, when he began teaching physical science at North Forsyth Middle School. Since then, he has earned a multitude of recognitions and achievements in education, including earning the GASSP Assistant Principal of the Year.

Did no one in-house want the job.... can't understand why if someone in-house wanted it we couldn't promote within the system. We couldn't hire a football coach from somewhere outside and had to promote within... oh I forgot.. they didn't want to spend the money to get a good one... this principal must be cheap then.

I'm sure there were people within the system that were interested, but perhaps none were qualified to continue the tradition of excellence that Mr. Bell had created in his five years at CMS. Mr. Ruma sounds like a great successor.

Trust me, a football coach is the least of Commerce's concerns. If certain departments don't get a makeover, they're likely to have some lawsuits on their hands!

We did have some one in the school system that wanted the job but the school board leaders would not let them have the job.

Mr. Ruma has been great to work for and has been a mentor to me. Commerce is gaining a strong leader and a great guy for the community. We will miss him at the CHEE and wish him the best of luck!

Will Mr. Ruma be moving to Commerce? A friend of mine who has worked with him, said that he lives in Gwinnett County and his wife teaches at GSU. That would be a long haul for her.
