The Commerce Police Department is investigating the death of Dr. Keith Ash, who was found dead Wednesday night at his Commerce residence.
Ash, a former surgeon at what was then BJC Medical Center, operated Urgent Care at Banks Crossing.
"The scene was handled as a crime scene because of the unattended nature of the death," explained John Gaissert, Commerce chief of police. "The body was taken to the crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy, and the investigation into the cause of death is ongoing at this time."
The autopsy was completed Thursday, Gaissert said, but the results of the toxicology study could take weeks.
Gaissert stressed that the department "had no indications" that the death was from suicide. Treating the scene as a crime scene, he said, was done to "process and handle it to make sure we document the facts and circumstances" surrounding the death.
Ash came to Commerce in 2004 as general surgeon at BJC Medical Center. He resigned in 2008. The following day, four former patients filed a lawsuit alleging medical malpractice from surgical procedures.

Thank you for being so good to us.
truely selfless when it came to your family, friends,
and your patients. We all will miss you deeply. We
love you and we will all remember and cherish the
moments we had together. From, Your friends of the
"Denny Crane" days.
To the Ash family, may God hear our prayers and
give you all the comfort and strength you need to
make it through this time.
Shut up by another Anonymous person is not a proper response. Personal insults should not be attached either.
"I believe Ash tried to do more than he could. He was operating many many hours a week plus seeing patients." (so it wasn't his fault ?)
" said that he made multiple mistakes but would not testify against him." (red flag)
"They should have regulated him more closely - but the bottom line might have been a driving factor." ( you admit management was more to blame)
You say you" I mean no disrespect to Dr Ash or the family " yet you continue to drag his name in the mud and post links to the medical board. On that matter a settlement means his insurance company settled before court Sheffield! He has no postive malpractice claims on record just settlements !
Your posts are all over and your credability in this matter is gone with the "I mean no disrespect but .... Hear me ! Listen to how I was done wrong ! posting proves your bitter because Mr Sheffield you didn't get a piece of the pie.
Let this man lie in peace and Jeff for your sake and that of your family... move on.
May god bless you and the Ash family.
To his family Our thoughts and prayers are with you!
Lost a Great Person and Dr. in this commuity.
Always refused to see another doctor because he always sat down and
Explained to me what my body was doing and why it was doing it.
It's so sad. My prayers are with his family and friends.
My prayers goes out to his wife and sons.he will be truly missed.I know I have to find another Doctor.I will have a very hard time finding another Dr.Ash.He was one of a kind.He was truly loved by my family.
This is a very sad moment for us all.

Dr.Ash was human. He was a very kind friend and doctor. I thank god I knew Dr.Ash. To the ones that lost love ones you have to forgive. He has a son a wife a mother and father and many friends
Have you ever made a error? People that live in glass houses need not cast stones. Dr.Ash brought the hospital out of the red! I had gall bladder surgery and I'm still living. Perhaps God
needed your love one he only takes the best.
Come on now regardless of what you feel show some respect and restraint.
My sympathy and condolances to the family.
It's very hard to find a good Doctor these day's. I felt like, I had not only found a good Dr but a friend that understood me, I could talk to Dr Ash one on one & he was very caring.
My husband liked him & said to me! Honey you got lucky, you found a good Doctor. I could hardly breath & he put me on some meds & breathing treatments & gave me a shot, I don't think I would have lived another day if not for that. I could tell that Dr Ash was over worked, but he was always cheerful & never complained. To his wife & Son & his other family members, May the Grace Of God watch over you all always. To his staff that looked like they always felt at home while working for Dr Ash, you all made me feel at home, & you all were so caring. T.y all for your kindness & may God Bless you all. So sorry for your loss. He will be missed.
“You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.” Matthew 7:5
Before you bring more prayer and forgiveness into the matter: learn respect for those still living and realize that being judgmental and abusive with your words is the same as a knife to the heart of his family.
My condolences and prayers to the family of Dr. Ash.
My heart goes out to his family and it also goes out to ALL the families this man has caused heart ache to.
*Children who needed physicals for sports and their parents could not afford it, he did the physicals for free
*Dr. Ash put an a/c unit in an elderly couples home during the summer because it was too hot for the patient and he knew she could not afford it. He made sure people had heaters in their house during the winter.
*He made sure people had food, medicine, and other things that they needed in everyday life when they could not afford it
*I watched him give money to several people who needed help feeding their children, paying the power bill, or buying food to feed their family.
*He came to a small town trying to make a difference but it seems like small towns have one or two too many who think they should try to sue to have a wealthy life instead of working for their own.
*He worked more hours in a week than most people work in a month once again trying to help and make a difference in this small town.
So before you condemn people take a look at your own life. He made more of a difference in the short time that he was here than most of us do our entire life. I think in most peoples eyes that he would be considered a "great man" who loved everyone and judged no one unlike the people who are judging him. The one thing that makes me smile to this day is if the people who are bashing him needed help he would not turn his back on them... He would do all he could to help anyone in any situation and say he wanted to help!
Let the family try to heal and pick up the pieces to try to have a life. Let them have good memories and not the struggles he had to face. Lastly, while you are talking about the malpractice cases did you research how many he was dismissed from. Maybe he wasn't even in the room when something happened. Or are you only trying to condemn a person by half of a story that you heard...We all know there's a lot more to every story in life.
