The Commerce Police Department made five arrests during the past week that cleared up four older cases.
They charged Tasha Lynn Everhart, 23, 210 Ward Road, Commerce, and Hubert Lee Nicolas McElreath, 26, of 1685 Young Harris Road, Danielsville, with felony theft by taking in connection with the May 9 theft of a motorcycle from Seymour’s impound yard on Madison Street.
At that time, someone had cut a chain on the gate and stolen the motorcycle, which was later recovered by Madison County Sheriff’s deputies following a chase. Neither Everhart nor McElreath was on the bike at the time, however.
Police clear 4 older cases with 5 arrests
Police also charged Scotty Terrell Whitfield, 39, 207 Amber Lane, Commerce, with theft by taking in connection with the theft of jewelry from a Hillcrest Street residence on June 10 and 11.
The victim recounted to police that she’d left a necklace out while she left the room in which Whitfield remained alone and it was gone when she returned. Whitfield was back at the residence the following day, so the victim deliberately left two necklaces out, giving him an opportunity to take them, according to the police report.
She came back to find the necklaces gone. The report noted that Whitfield, at the time, denied the theft.
Also last week, officers arrested Debrah Gable, 50, of 2324 Unity Church Road, Maysville, on a charge of attempted theft by taking.
That stems from an incident June 27 at Miranda’s Tires, Maysville Road, in which the owner of the business came into the office after repairing Gable’s tires and found the company moneybox out of place. He reviewed the store’s video surveillance and saw the female customer — whose name he did not know — trying unsuccessfully to open the box.
He gave police a tag number that returned to Gable.
In the other incident, police announced the arrest of Thomas Mitchell Minish, 31, 48 Buttercup Lane, Lavonia, for motor vehicle theft. He allegedly stole a vehicle parked in front of Sanders Furniture Company.
Other Charges
Commerce police also made 11 arrests for incidents that occurred during the past week, including:
•James Michael Vinson, 45, 6400 Dove Drive, Loganville, obstruction of an officer, giving false information and a probation violation warrant from Walton County for an original charge of driving under the influence (DUI) of intoxicants. Vinson was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over on South Elm Street because a trailer it was pulling had no taillights. When the officer asked Vinson for identification, the arrest report said Vinson claimed not to have any ID and identified himself as “Richard Michael Smith.” A State Patrol trooper on the scene ran that information, which returned to a Tennessee man, and when the officer asked “Smith” for his Social Security number, the suspect told him he “didn’t memorize” those kinds of things.
A search of the vehicle turned up Vinson’s Social Security card.
•Brenda Ann Brown, 32, 126 Nunn Street, Commerce, driving with a suspended license. She was pulled over on Nunn Street by an officer who recognized her from a domestic incident and knew her license was suspended.
•Troy David Wilder, 50, 935 Homer Road, Lot 66, possession of cocaine, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, no proof of insurance and a tire violation. The charges came after an officer saw the vehicle, ran its tag and found out it was not insured. As he dealt with Wilder, the officer reported that Wilder was rummaging around between the seat and the center console and refused verbal commands to “show” his hands — until the officer pulled his service pistol and repeated the command one more time. The officer found a brillo pad and a cigarette pack under the seat. According to the report, Wilder admitted using the brillo pad for the smoking of cocaine, as well as a section of rubber hose found in his pocket. Upon inspecting the cigarette pack, the officer reported finding four rocks of crack cocaine. He also noted that the front right tire had no tread.
•Joshua Wayne Sorrow, 30, 168 Crestwood Circle, Commerce, arrested on a failure to appear warrant from the Winder Police Department during the investigation of a “suspicious” person.
•Orlando Prescott Niles, 40, 62 Pine Avenue, Commerce, arrested on an unspecified Jackson County warrant in the course of investigating a dispute over a video gaming system in which Niles allegedly took a woman’s PlayStation and refused to give it back.
•Luis Alberto Martinez, 45, 935 Homer Road, Lot 74, Commerce, driving without a license. He was pulled over on North Broad Street for a tag light violation and when asked for a driver’s license provided a Mexican ID.
•Moises Zirangua-Rosas, 28, 3658 Buford Highway NE, Apt. 6, Atlanta, driving without a license, failure to wear a seat belt and violation of the open container law. An officer pulled him over on U.S. 441 after observing that he was not wearing a seat belt. The officer discovered an open 12-pack of Bud Light beer in the vehicle, four containers of which were empty.
•Jerry Rogers, 39, 773 Highway 98, Commerce, aggravated stalking, disorderly conduct, obstruction of officers and public drunkenness. The charges came following a response to a report of a male and female fighting. When officers arrived and went to the door, a man answered the door and told them it was his son and his girlfriend, that the woman was in the shower and the son had left. He did, however, allow the officers to search for Rogers, who they found hiding in a bedroom closet. Rogers reported that he and his girlfriend, a 38-year-old white female, were fighting over “Mac and cheese.” One of the officers knew that a condition of Rogers’ bond from a Habersham County court was that he stay away from the woman.
•Calvin Carter, 30, 159 Campbell Street SE, Atlanta, misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over on Interstate 85 for speeding (88/70). The officer noticed the smell of raw marijuana. A search turned up a small amount of marijuana “scattered about” the vehicle, the report said, and Carter surrendered a plastic bag of the illegal substance after removing it from his pants.
•Katherine Denise Hogan, 23, 1391 Highway 172, Colbert, failure to obey a traffic signal and no driver’s license on her person. A passenger, Johnny Curtis Queen, 19, 102 Quiet Oak Drive, Crawford, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after an officer found a pipe with marijuana residue and some empty plastic bags that smelled strongly of raw marijuana. The officer also recovered a prescription bottle with seven Alprazalom tablets belonging to “a buddy” of one of the occupants, and the officer reported that he advised a third person in the vehicle to “think about making better choices.”
