As if declining property values and reduced natural gas sales were not enough of a challenge, the Commerce government stands to see its annual income from the local option sales tax (LOST) fall by $130,000 to $200,000 or more.
In a budget of more than $28 million, that may seem like small potatoes, but added to the other reductions in revenue already experienced and with little hope of significant economic recovery in the near future, it heightens the sense that any hope of developing new recreation facilities anytime soon are unwarranted. Given the relentless erosion of income, Commerce just can’t afford to maintain a new park, let alone build one
OPINION: Now not the time to develop new park

Well Mark if u don't think we need a new park then go to surrounding county's and take a look. Look at how many kids and parents that are supporting the area. If u want my opinion the kids of commerce should have a new park to be proud of and take pride in... not a old out dated one that we have to make due with as you and the rest of the tightwads in commerce believe. We got a very good rec director now and he is working hard to provide a great place for not only our children but others as well.. understand something... if you don't work with him then he's just gonna look somewhere were the community is willing to spend and work with him!

I suppose you're volunteering to pay for it?

I would be more than happy to pay a little more in taxes to get a new park in the city. This city needs to move forward. The recreation department has hosted several tournaments this year. Do you know what that means? That means people come to Commerce to spend money! This may be a shock to you but that is a good thing!! Times are tough and we need to bring in as much money as we can. If that means expanding parks and rec then I am all for it. Jefferson has done an excellent job in expanding. Why are people in Commerce so against it?
