Tapping a popular fall decorating theme, the Commerce Downtown Development Authority plans to fill the downtown with scarecrows through Nov. 12.
Executive director Denise McKay invited the Commerce Recreation Department to ask its soccer, football and softball teams to join a scarecrow competition at Spencer Park, has asked Commerce Primary School to support a class scarecrow contest that will put scarecrows in the downtown flower beds, and has asked merchants to decorate with scarecrows.
The DDA will sponsor an ice cream party for each primary school grade-level winner, McKay said.
In addition, said McKay, she has made contact with the Banks County Chamber of Commerce about creating a joint “scarecrow trail” as a tourism incentive.
