The construction phase of the expansion of the Commerce Public Library is on target and should wind up before Christmas.
“We think it will be done by Dec. 21,” reports Beth McIntyre, director of the Piedmont Regional Library. “We plan on having a grand re-opening celebration in January or February.”
Once the contractor turns the building over, McIntyre said it will take a week or longer to move everything back into the building from its temporary location at the former Video Warehouse building on North Elm Street.
“It took a week to move out,” McIntyre said. “We think it will take a week or just a little more to move back in.”
Then, she said, a team from the Georgia Public Library staff, along with city of Commerce workers and the regional library’s IT director will install all of the computers and other technology into the new space.
The $2 million expansion project will add 5,000 square feet to the library, which is located on South Broad Street.
“It’s very exciting,” McIntyre concluded.

$2,000,000 for 5,000 sq ft? That's $400 per sq ft. The average cost of construction in Ga is about $121 per sq ft. or $605,000 for the expansion project. That leaves enough money for 2,800 computers/TVs.
