If Rep. Tommy Benton gets his way, local school systems will no longer have to pay excise taxes on fuel for their buses and other vehicles.
Benton (R-Jefferson), a retired schoolteacher, introduced House Bill 211 last week to help school systems save a few dollars in transportation costs. While he had no estimates on the potential savings for the Commerce, Jefferson and Jackson County school systems in District 31, he said the statewide savings to school systems is estimated at $5 million.
