It was the thank-you note from the Internal Revenue Service that tipped off a 58-year-old white male that someone had stolen his personal information, according to the Commerce Police Department.
The Old Harden Orchard Road resident reported receiving a letter from the IRS thanking him for filing his income tax return early. Upon investigating, the victim said the IRS told him someone had used his Social Security number on four attempts since Feb. 2 to file a tax return in his name.
The victim told police that someone also used his personal information to obtain six credit cards from Macy’s and American Eagle stores.
For all of the incidents responded to over the past week by the Commerce Police Department, see the Feb. 27 issue of The Commerce News.
