Walgreens Pharmacy got stuck with five phony $100 bills in a series of three apparently related incidents last week, according to reports from the Commerce Police Department.
City police got involved when a cashier called to report that a black male tried to purchase a magazine with a counterfeit $100 bill. She said that when she told the man it was counterfeit, he grabbed the bogus bill and left the store.
Shortly prior to that, a black female had purchased a Green Dot card using four $100 bills that proved to be fake, but which store officials had not recognized as counterfeit at the time.
As the manager was removing those from the cash register, he found a fifth fake $100 bill, for which no explanation was offered.
The report indicated that the currency comprised five $1 bills that had been bleached and reprinted as $100 bills.
Video surveillance at the time revealed that the perpetrators left in a black Chevy Impala.
