Commerce police officers let the driver of a vehicle confirmed as stolen in Florida drive the vehicle away following a traffic stop this past week on Interstate 85.
Alerted by the auto tag reader that the vehicle was reported stolen, an officer pulled it over on the interstate. The driver, a 37-year-old black female, told the officer that her husband had rented the vehicle from a Ft. Lauderdale firm six weeks prior. He was supposed to return it after two weeks, she said, adding that she and her husband had been in contact with the car rental company and would pay for the extra four weeks of use.
The report noted that dispatch confirmed that the vehicle was listed as stolen. However, when Broward County, Florida officials declined to have a hold placed on the vehicle, police turned it back over to the driver.
