A move by Walton International to have 1,000 acres of South Jackson land annexed into Arcade has caught not only the attention of residents in the area, but also that of Jackson County leaders who are, in effect, being bypassed with the move.
Walton withdrew a 2012 bid to have its property rezoned by the county government after it became clear that effort would fail. But if the land gets annexed into Arcade, that city, not the county government, will determine the land’s zoning.
The issue was the main topic at a meeting of the Jackson County Water & Sewerage Authority last week. Board of commissioners chairman Tom Crow told the authority the county does have some objections to the annexation, but that its hands are mostly tied in the matter. He said the only notification that the county is required to have from the city is that it is “doing it.”
