Northeast Georgians awakened to falling snow Tuesday morning as the winter storm predicted by the National Weather Service arrived.
Local schools were cancelled and will be closed Wednesday. Tuesday's snowfall is expected to turn to rain as temperatures warm, but will transition back to a mix of rain, sleet and snow, which could continue Wednesday morning, turning into freezing rain. By Thursday morning, the precipitation is expected to return to snow.
Heavy truck traffic going south on Interstate 85 has been diverted onto U.S. 441 toward Madison due to the possibility of black ice, according to Sheriff Janis Mangum, who also urged local residents to stay off the roads as much as possible.
