Commerce finally put the Walgreens’ sign variance request behind it.
The city council voted Monday night to deny the pharmacy’s request for a variance in the size of its sign, but agreed to allow it to have a digital letterboard as part of the sign.
The store is under construction at the corner of North Elm Street and Homer Road.
Councilman Bob Sosebee made the motion to accept the Commerce Planning Commission’s recommendation to require the company to stay within the 24-square-foot guideline of the ordinance.
But the city council sent a strong signal to the planning commission Monday night that it isn’t happy with the status quo. The council replaced two of its members whose terms expired in August with new appointees.
Ward 2 Councilman Donald Wilson nominated incumbent Ronnie Seabolt, who has been on the planning commission for eight years, for another term, but Ward 3 Councilman Mark Fitzpatrick nominated Darren Owensby.
Wilson, Mayor Pro Tem Dusty Slater and Ward 1 Councilman Wayne Gholston voted for Wilson, while Fitzpatrick, Sosebee and Ward 5 Councilman Richard Massey voted for Owensby. In a rare opportunity to break a tie vote, Mayor Charles L. Hardy Jr. voted for Owensby.
Massey nominated Cindy Adams for the seat now held by Donald Nation. The vote was unanimous.
they work for the phone company.
Seabolt has done a great job for the city as a planning commissioner, but this group isn't interested in doing the right thing or what is good for the normal people. They want puppets. The more they have in different parts of the government the better. They have puppets in the city council, the IDA, the newspaper, the county commission, and now the city planning commission. And they get voter approval in the meek turnout in elections. People are either hoping for their big break into the club or disenchanted with the entire system.

what qualifies Fitzpatrick and Owensby?
they work for the phone company.
I think honest working Americans should hold the offices,
like Planning Commissioner. Seabolt & Owensby are/were
friends and should still be. If this comes betweens true
friends than maybe it wasn't real.
Why not give Owensby a chance. New blood does not mean
tainted blood.
I agreed with Jeff when he stated
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but it sounds like you
just want your way or no way. Was what happened SO bad,
Mr. Seabolt never voted on any hard issues......let some
new folks give it a try. How does this have anything to
do with the schools?
Remember when you point a finger at
Owensby you have four more pointing at your self.
At least I know Owensby is a God fearing Christian man.

it to do the right thing. Unless you have served dont be so
hard on them.......it is not as easy as it looks.
The facts are that the council went against that ward's councilman and appointed someone over their choice. Each councilman makes an appointment. The good old boy side of the council decided to pad it with their man instead of the actual correct appointment.
The issue with the schools is very deep. First, the good old boy side of the council wanted more say in the BOE's issues. The BOE should be going after the council for annexing so much and approving low quality subdivisions with no regard to the impact on the schools. It boils down to a power struggle. And Seabolt and his wife are independent thinkers. To them, the best for the citizens is best for all. To the others, it reflects only on their click.
hearing?......the BOE does not answer to the city council
in this town or most others..dont see this part of it,
but I am just looking in from the outside.
The council defers their public hearing to the planning commission. It avoids actually being in front of the citizens. In their minds it make the meetings go faster.
this is not a by district appointment that there could have
been many names in the pot and there is a vote by the council
