Last week I ran into one of life’s challenging little assignments. I needed to take a car down to Jackson, Georgia, deliver it to my cousin Douglas, and then somehow obtain a rental car so I would have a way to get back to Commerce.

Since Jackson is a county seat, I’d initially assumed that there would be a car-rental agency in town. I was wrong. Fortunately, Enterprise Car Rental came to my rescue. They’ve figured out that if you need to rent a car, it’s because you are at least temporarily without one. (Sounds so obvious, doesn’t it? But that’s often the way it is with strokes of genius.) So they keep a driver on hand to pick you up – even if you’re in another town. [Full Story »]

The Commerce Planning Commission voted to recommend passage of a new zoning district during its Monday meeting.

Chamber directors endorse T-SPLOST

As it has done with previous sales tax referendums, the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors voted without dissent last Friday to endorse passage of the 10-year T-SPLOST on July 31.

President Shane Short argued the case before the directors, reminding them that passage of the 10-year transportation sales tax will bring almost $1 billion into the 12-county region. Three-quarters of that money will go to fund projects approved by a district roundtable chaired by Hunter Bicknell, and the rest will be apportioned among the cities and counties in the region.

You know the educational system is in dire straits when schools employ dogs to improve reading skills.

A couple claiming to have purchased a GMC Jimmy for $150 from an unknown man at a location under a bridge — without getting a bill of sale or a title — faces charges of theft by receiving stolen property, according to the Commerce Police Department.

The suspects are Tony Lee Webb, 52, and Linda Ruthi Webb, 46, both of 124 Forest Lake Drive, Commerce.

The Commerce Parks and Recreation Department is accepting swim registrations through Friday, May 4 at the recreation office, 204 Carson St. Hours are 1-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
