Failure to appear catches up to 4

Four people got first-hand experience during the past week in why it pays to show up for a court date, according to the Commerce Police Department.

Two were charged with driving with a suspended license for failure to appear for previous offenses and two were picked up on warrants for failure to appear.

When someone does not appear in court and the judge issues an FTA warrant, a $100 fee is automatically applied — over and above any fine coming from the original charges. In addition, if the court notifies the state of the failure to appear, the state can suspend the suspect’s driver’s license, which results in an additional hefty fine if the suspect is pulled over for a traffic violation.

Former Commerce Mayor Charles L. “Buzzie” Hardy Jr. got a retirement sendoff last week that included people most likely to appreciate his service — his fellow mayors.

Seven mayors — many of them longtime friends — came to the city-hosted reception last Thursday at the Commerce Civic Center to help local residents show appreciation for Hardy’s 22 years of service.

Habitat dedicates its ninth house

Jackson County Habitat for Humanity dedicated its ninth house, located at Duncan Street, in Commerce on Saturday, Dec. 31, at 10 a.m. The house, the affiliate’s ninth build, will become the home of Jason Hendrix.

“In addition to marking the completion of the house, this event will honor all of those individuals, organizations and churches whose generosity of time and money has helped make this house a reality,” said Jackson County Habitat affiliate president Mark Bradley. “It will celebrate a deserving young man’s new home, and the miracle of what can be accomplished through commitment and caring.” [Full Story »]

National Screen Free Week (formerly TV Turnoff Week) is planned for April 30-May 6. It’s an ill-fated annual attempt to wean the public from “Judge Judy,” “Two And A Half Men,” “The Biggest Loser” and other critical TV fare brought to us by Windstream and Direct TV if not by Satan himself.

By an act of the legislature, introduced by Rep. Tommy Benton, I propose we move National Screen-Free Week to Feb. 29-March 6. [Full Story »]

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) must still give its blessing, but it appears that the residents of Oconee Pointe Subdivision and Northeast Georgia Bank have resolved a dispute over 10 lots supposedly designated as greenspace.

With the consent of both parties, the Commerce Planning Commission voted unanimously Monday night to recommend to the Commerce City Council a proposal that:

Four acres in the Commerce 85 Business Park are being conveyed to Jackson County for possible use for a future EMS/fire station.

The Jackson County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) voted last Friday to authorize the execution of a “deed of gift” to the county for 4.172 acres in the park.

Police called to break up 'racist' dispute

Two Commerce police officers had to diffuse a dispute at Fuel Mart last week between a white male and a black female who, a witness said, were both “being racist.”

According to the incident report, the woman entered the store with her son, a juvenile. The boy dislodged a wooden block used to hold the door open, and a white male customer told the boy to put the stop back.
