The 2012 presidential campaign is about to begin in earnest, and all indications are it will be the most expensive ever, by far, and the ugliest. Because Georgia is not considered a swing state, it is unlikely that we’ll be blasted with the same level of diatribe as some other states, but we’ll get more than enough.
This is a watershed event in political campaigning. It will be the first year the super-PACs have been in the fray — groups whose sources of money can be kept secret and on whom there are no contribution or spending limits and no requirement that the contributors be identified. The result will be endless numbers of attack ads financed by people who remain invisible.
