The City of Commerce will officially install its new mayor and city council members in a called meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22.

In the Commerce Room of the Commerce Civic Center, the only item on the agenda will be to swear in Clark Hill as mayor and Mark Fitzpatrick (Ward 3), Steve Perry (Ward 4) and Johnny Eubanks (Ward 5) as city councilmen.

Fitzpatrick and Eubanks are incumbents who ran without opposition on Nov. 8. Hill defeated Donald Wilson and Tommy Stephenson to succeed 22-year mayor Charles L. Hardy Jr. and Perry defeated Chris Bulls to win the council seat vacated by Hill.

Georgia's unemployment rate falls

Georgia’s unemployment rate declined to 9.9 percent in November, down three-tenths of a percentage point from 10.2 percent in October. The one-month decline is the largest in 34 years. The jobless rate was 10.4 percent in November a year ago.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the rate dropped because there was an increase of 22,400 jobs in the state and not all of the growth was tied to holiday hiring. [Full Story »]

Commerce man injured in Madison County wreck

A Commerce man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on McGinnis Chandler Road in Madison County Friday morning.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Edward Minish, 67, was injured when he lost control of his 2000 Chevy pickup in a curve and ran off the roadway into a ditch at approximately 7:44 a.m. The vehicle overturned and came to rest in a field.

The “jaws of life” were used to extricate Edwards, who was flown by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital.

A Maysville woman and an Elberton man face felony drug charges after an officer pulled them over for suspicious activity in an area known for drug sales.

Stacey Ranee Walls, 45, 514 Sears Drive, Maysville, is charged with possession of cocaine and possession of Schedule 2 narcotics. [Full Story »]

City electric superintendent injured in accident

Commerce’s electric department superintendent Sammy Ingram was expected to be released from an Athens hospital today after an on-the-job accident Tuesday.

According to city manager Clarence Bryant, Ingram was one of several people holding a rope, attempting to direct the fall of a tree being cut down off Lakeview Drive on city school property. [Full Story »]

Commerce woman killed in Marietta mishap

A Commerce woman visiting a relative at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, died early Saturday morning from injuries received during an accident Friday afternoon in the hospital parking lot.

A friend of the family said Joanne Legg had exited the parked car was getting items out of the back when another vehicle struck the Legg vehicle. The impact knocked her to the ground, where she struck her head on the pavement. She died at about 4:45 Saturday morning.

Her husband, Jack Legg, who was in the car at the time it was struck, was not injured.

Christmas in the park Saturday in Maysville

Maysville will celebrate Christmas in the Park downtown on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The event will feature a lighted parade, craft vendors and Santa, and organizers are seeking parade entries. There are no restrictions on parade entries — except four-wheelers are not allowed.

Santa will be at the park for children to see after the parade.

Crossing Place apartment burgled

A Commerce couple reported some unappreciated assistance as they moved out of a Crossing Place apartment on Monday.

The couple, a 27-year-old white male and 26-year-old white female, explained that they had served notice on the apartment management that they were moving out and had just about completed the move, except for tools, some paint, a TV and Christmas gifts. [Full Story »]
