The Athens-Clarke Police Department has announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Sean Buchanan of Commerce last Sunday in Athens.

Cody Stanley Lumpkin, 21, of Athens surrendered Wednesday after a three-hour standoff. The murder weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

The two men pulled over on Interstate 85 for doing 95 miles per hour in a rental car couldn’t agree on where they were going, but both professed to have no knowledge of a blue backpack in the trunk that contained $19,480 in bundled U.S. Currency.

If charges of felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and pedestrian under the influence didn’t make for a bad enough day, a Jefferson man cinched it by urinating and defecating on himself during his arrest.

According to the arrest report, an officer encountered a vehicle stopped in the middle of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at 11:04 p.m. The officer noted smoke rising from the hood and a white male and female at the vehicle. [Full Story »]

Traffic stop may led to gun trafficking charges

Two men pulled over for traffic violations on Interstate 85 last week may face federal weapons trafficking charges, according to the Commerce Police Department.

An officer on patrol on I-85 noticed a vehicle driving 65 miles per hour in the left lane and holding up traffic, and when the officer pulled in behind the vehicle, the driver abruptly swerved into the right lane without signaling, nearly causing an accident. The Commerce Police Department is investigating a pair of Saturday night burglaries at Homer Road businesses that bore strong similarities.

An employee of Nail Artists told police that she’d left money in the cash register when she went home. When she returned, she found the lock on the door drilled, the cash missing and that someone had “went through” 24 bottles of nail polish.
