The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrested 48 people during the past week, including the following:

•Eduardo Arsiga-Martinez, 50, 3245 Eagle Grove School Road, Dewy Rose, use of license plate to conceal identity of vehicle and driving while license suspended.

The new East Jackson Eagle head football coach is a former Tiger.

The Jackson County Board of Education hired former Clemson Tiger player Brian Smith as the new head football coach at East Jackson Comprehensive High School. The action took place last Thursday night following a 45-minute closed session to discuss personnel. [Full Story »]

A new era in sports begins in Commerce as Marvin Justice was named the new head football coach at Commerce High School.

The 45-year-old Justice has been an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Tigers. The board received over 70 applications for the position and interviewed coaches from Heard County, Paulding County and Dodge County. [Full Story »]

County to use herbicides to reduce right of way mowing

Jackson County will implement a new vegetation control program the first week of February. Instead of cutting grass on 82 roads throughout the county totaling about 200 miles, the county will spray them with herbicides.

The Jackson County Road Department plans to spray in February and June to reduce the frequency of mowing. [Full Story »]

School board dips into reserves to fund FY 2010-11 budget

The Commerce Board of Education approved its Fiscal Year 2011 Budget Nov. 8, dipping into its reserve funds to the tune of $556,000.
Projected revenue is set at $11,031,894 and expenses at $11,588,152.

Director of finance Ann Stokey said that utilizing that much of reserves is unlikely and will be avoided if possible. [Full Story »]
