A Commerce man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday morning for murdering his wife.

Martin Seymour, 31, was sentenced by Judge Currie Mingledorf to the life sentence with the possibility of parole. He would not be eligible for parole for 30 years.

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners took action Monday night to help the BJC Medical Center Authority resolve cash flow problems and pay short-term debts.

The commissioners agreed to send a letter of guarantee and line of credit to Bank of America on hospital bonds Jackson and Banks counties are already paying. When the bonds were sold, they were structured so that the assets of the hospital were pledged as collateral. [Full Story »] 

The new county fire-training center will not have the driving course included in the original design and was supported by the county fire association.

In a 3-2 vote, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners voted to remove the driving course and instead increase the size of the concrete pad located around the burn tower to 285 by 300.

The struggling BJC Medical Center needs cash from Banks and Jackson counties to stay afloat.

Rick Massey, a member of BJC Medical Center Authority, appeared before the Jackson County Board of Commissioners Monday night to ask the county to guarantee — and repay — 75 percent of a $5.2 million loan, as well as guarantee 75 percent of a $1 million line of credit.
