In the latest meeting to discuss the City of Nicholson’s proposed 2012 budget totaling $426,000, council member Chuck Wheeler questioned the amounts included in the proposed budget for equipment and roadwork.

Wheeler said, “I know people think I want to cut the budget, but that’s not it. I think we might want to put more in some places.”

Mayor Ronnie Maxwell advised Wheeler that road work and equipment will come out of special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) revenue over the next six years – not out of the general fund.

The Nicholson City Council is still trying to get its 2012 budget passed. Meeting Monday night, the council couldn’t muster the votes to approve the $462,894 spending plan.

The council held a public hearing at 9 a.m. on Monday and no one showed up to question the proposed budget, Mayor Ronnie Maxwell said.

Jackson County Board of Commissioners chairman Hunter Bicknell announced Monday afternoon that he will run for the newly-created 9th Congressional District seat in Northeast Georgia. He will run as a Republican.

Bicknell has served as BOC chairman since 2009 and recently he led a roundtable of local officials who selected projects for a proposed regional transportation sales tax. [Full Story »] 

The Nicholson City Council presented its proposed 2012 annual budget totaling $462,894 Thursday night.

That is a 12.9-percent increase over the 2011 budget totaling $410,000.

The City of Nicholson will celebrate Independence Day with a fireworks show again this year.

The event is set to begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, in the park behind Nicholson City Hall.

On a 3-1 vote on Monday, the Nicholson City Council approved an animal control ordinance.

Council member Lamar Watkins cast the lone vote against the ordinance proposed by Mayor Ronnie Maxwell.

Some Nicholson residents are concerned about a veterans memorial being removed from the town’s public library.

At the monthly work session meeting of the Nicholson City Council Thursday night, April 21, two local residents voiced their concern about the recent removal of the military wall of honor at the Harold S. Swindle Public Library.

The Friends of the Harold S. Swindle Public Library group recently made the decision to take down the wall of honor and put the photos in a carousel “Book of Heroes” in the center of the room.

The Nicholson Daisy Festival will take place Friday through Sunday.

Vendors will set up booths beginning Friday morning offering a variety of food, handmade carvings, jewelry, purses, glass blowing, candles, and a variety of other items.

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to have interim county manager Leonard Myers investigate the alleged forced resignation of a county department head in March.

Commissioner Tom Crow made the motion after reading a prepared letter about questionable actions by former county manager Darrell Hampton.

Crow stated: “It appears that because of my efforts to gather information one of our department heads was forced to resign. The instruction (from Hampton) to have resignation tendered by March of 2011 was given during fall of 2010 after this department head had answered questions from me.” [Full Story »]
