Area Republican leaders appeared before the Jackson County Board of Commissioners Monday night to ask that the board move forward with redistricting.

Commerce will kick off its Christmas season this weekend with a host of events Friday and Saturday followed by the annual Christmas parade Sunday afternoon.

Friday night will feature Commerce by Candlelight from 5 to 9, with candlelit sidewalks, carolers, a live nativity scene, horse-drawn carriage rides, refreshments in Spencer Park, door prizes and photos with Santa.

Adult shoppers can pick up a “passport” at the Downtown Development Authority office at 1645 South Elm Street to qualify for door prizes. [Full Story »]

From the Hometown Holidays weekend Dec. 3-5 to the Christmas Shopping Finale Dec. 21-23, downtown holiday events are taking shape.

That was the gist of a report given by Downtown Development Authority chairman Denise McKay at the DDA’s November meeting last Wednesday.

'Critical' shortage of foster homes in Jackson

November is National Adoption Month in America, but the people who oversee adoptions in Jackson County say there is a critical need for foster families.

And since 80 percent of adoptions are done by foster parents, the number of foster homes is directly related to how many kids will eventually be adopted.

Right now, Jackson County has 13 foster homes, but there are 93 children in the custody of the county’s Department of Family and Children Services, notes Tasha Flynn, resource development case manager for Barrow and Jackson counties. [Full Story »]

BOE approves swim team at CHS

The Commerce City Schools’ board of education approved a new athletic team, which will dive into its season immediately.

The high school was authorized to organize a swim team this winter with limited participation and a scaled-back schedule to include about three to four competitive meets, said athletic director and principal Donnie Drew. [Full Story »]

It may or may not be on the agenda for Monday night’s meeting, but the Commerce City Council continues to struggle with whether it should require a permit for replacing shingles on roofs and, if so, how it can enforce the ordinance.

The issue surfaced at the council’s work session Monday night, but it is not clear whether it will be on the agenda for any final action when the council meets Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Commerce Room of the Commerce Civic Center.

New EMS station planned in Commerce

On a 3-2 vote, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners agreed Monday night on a design and budget for new EMS stations in Commerce and West Jackson. The Commerce location would be on Steve Reynolds Industrial Boulevard about a half mile off Hwy. 98, according to public safety director Steve Nichols.

A new EMS station is also planned for Plainview but that design and budget were not included in the vote because the land acquisition is not finished. The design of the EMS station in Plainview is expected to be the same but the specifics won’t be determined until the land purchase is finalized.
