'Meet the artist" event set downtown Saturday

Two downtown Commerce businesses will bring 12 local artists into the downtown Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. for a Meet the Artist event.

They will “have a wide variety of mediums,” noted Denise McKay, executive director of the Commerce Downtown Development Authority.

Maysville to balance budget with reserve funds

The Maysville City Council spent more than an hour at a meeting last week looking over the city’s proposed 2012 budget, which currently relies on the contingency fund to cover its expenses.

The fund’s depletion became the starting point for the council’s first budget workshop last week as city clerk Barbara Thomas confirmed the emergency account would drop next year to about $10,000 from its current level of $47,531. [Full Story »]

The Nicholson City Council presented its proposed 2012 annual budget totaling $462,894 Thursday night.

That is a 12.9-percent increase over the 2011 budget totaling $410,000.

The Commerce City Schools Board of Education passed an $11.12 million budget, which projects a steep dip into the reserve fund balance that will deplete the fund to $144,525 over the 2012 fiscal year

The vote happened during the board’s regular meeting on Monday; however a copy of the budget did not publish in the newspaper, which is legally required, so the board held a called meeting Wednesday to repeat the process.

People who post yard sale signs on the public (or railroad) rights of way from now on may face fines in city court.

The Commerce City Council took no action Monday night on altering its policy for permitting yard sales, but city manager Clarence Bryant said Tuesday morning that city staff will be out on Saturdays looking for offenders. [Full Story »]

Bear Creek Reservoir likely to be closed rest of year

The boat ramp at the Bear Creek Reservoir will likely be closed until mid-winter or later, thanks to the ongoing drought.

But there is a movement afoot to lengthen the ramp so that next time the lake level drops the ramp will still be serviceable.

The Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority, which owns and manages the 505-acre drinking water reservoir, agreed last week to have its Recreation Committee consider the prospect.

Keep Jackson County Beautiful will hold its fall recycling event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 8, near the landfill off County Farm Road, Jefferson.

Jackson County citizens can recycle electronics, household paint, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, automotive oil and batteries, good used clothing and even still-in-date food items.

Jackson residents may see slightly lower tax bills

Because property values have fallen over the past 12 months and the Jackson County Board of Commissioners set the 2011 property tax rate pretty much at last year’s levels, county taxpayers might actually see lower tax bills this fall than last.

Meeting Friday afternoon, the board set the rate at 9.58 mills for incorporated areas, which is up three one-hundredths of a mill over last year, and at 8.61 mills for unincorporated areas — the same as last year.

Jackson County hires a new manager

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners’ search for a new county manager ended Friday afternoon.

In a unanimous vote, the commissioners hired Kevin Poe, who will be 51 in November, to fill the position. He is currently the Floyd County manager, a position he’s held for 17 years.

Poe will be paid $140,000 and will begin work no later than Dec. 11. [Full Story »]
