Traffic stops lead to drug charges

The Commerce Police Department continues to make drug cases against people pulled over for routine traffic violations.

Over the past week, the department filed three felony charges and three misdemeanor drug charges as a result of traffic stops.

Pedestrian 'critical' after being hit Friday

A man struck by a vehicle Friday night while walking across South Elm Street near the intersection with Ila Road was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition with a fractured skull and other injuries.

Trooper Matt Miles said Isabel Perez-Amaro, 41, of Maysville, ran across the road in front of a Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Timothy Howell, Maysville early Friday night.

Jackson County deputies report 28 arrests

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office charged 28 people last week, including the following:

•Thomas Earl Partlo, 51, 62 Williamson Lane, Commerce, criminal attempt to commit bestiality and cruelty to children.

•Phillip Stone Johnson, 37, 75 Main Street, Hoschton, aggravated battery and aggravated assault. [Full Story »]

Perhaps Commerce area residents are practicing their good behavior in preparation for Christmas, because in the past week the Commerce Police Department announced just five arrests and reported only one other incident.

The most serious of those was an arrest for battery. Police charged Eric Vester Brown, 36, of 430 Williford Street, following an argument in which he allegedly struck another man in the face. [Full Story »] 

Wrong-way driving leads to felony charge

Officers of the Commerce Police Department made a felony drug arrest last week after stopping a man driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

An officer pulled over Brady Robert Burns, 29, of 500 Old Ivy Road Northeast, Atlanta, for driving on the wrong side of North Broad Street at about 9:04 p.m. on Sunday, according to the incident report.

Maysville man wants to know who shot his dog

A Maysville man is appealing to people attending a party at a neighbor’s house Saturday night when someone shot his Chihuahua in the neck with a pellet gun.

Jerry Massey said he was sitting on the front porch of his Hidden Meadows Drive, Maysville, residence Saturday night just before sunset when he heard the sound of the gun being fired.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office charged 45 people last week, including the following:

•Helen Virginia Allen, 27, 492 Briarwood Lane, Hull, probation violation.

•Aubrey Franklin Arnold, 31, 1724 Highway 330, Bogart, violation of the Georgia controlled substance act (VGCSA) – possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tag light violation. [Full Story »] 

A-C police arrest Buchanan murder suspect

The Athens-Clarke Police Department has announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Sean Buchanan of Commerce last Sunday in Athens.

Cody Stanley Lumpkin, 21, of Athens surrendered Wednesday after a three-hour standoff. The murder weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

Police confiscate $19,480 in 'unclaimed' cash

The two men pulled over on Interstate 85 for doing 95 miles per hour in a rental car couldn’t agree on where they were going, but both professed to have no knowledge of a blue backpack in the trunk that contained $19,480 in bundled U.S. Currency.
